MainRoom - She’s In Control Interview

We are sooooo excited! This weekend StreamGM is broadcasting live from Escape To Freight Island, for our very first episode of MainRoom - Manchester’s first grassroots clubbing series.

Each monthly episode shines a spotlight on vibrant and emerging events, direct from the dance floors of the deepest, darkest spaces, nightspots, rooftops, and basements around the city-region.

And boom! We kick MainRoom off with an absolute BANG! with a brand new event called: She’s In Control curated by the wonderful Supernature Disco.

DJ’s Gina Breeze, Jade Li, Danielle Moore and Edie will be on MainRoom 430-8pm, representing Freight’s first She’s In Control day festival, with only female and people of marginalised genders taking part.

The weather is set to be a bright and breezy 20 something degrees…. There will be 14, yes - 14 DJs on during the 10 hour Freight Island extravaganza, and even some crazy alien dancers to entertain the crowd.

Ahead of the big day, our MainRoom presenter, DJ Mix-Stress caught up with She’s In Control boss BB from Supernature Disco, and DJ’s Jade Li and Muddy Feet, to discuss what it is like being a female DJ, the gender inequality they have encountered over the years on the decks, and the inspiration for She’s In Control.

She’s In Control also aims to highlight and support the work of Brighter Sound - the Manchester-based music charity supporting young creatives, independent artists, and up-and-coming industry professionals in the North of England.

In 2017 they launched Both Sides Now - a gender equality initiative to support, inspire and showcase women and people of marginalised genders in music. Since then they've supported 500 creative development opportunities, 35 traineeships in backstage and technical roles, 120 development opportunities for emerging leaders, and produced an equality-focussed curriculum resource reaching 1.2m children nationally.

In 2020 StreamGM collaborated with and produced a Both Sides Now stream with Brighter Sound.
